Humanist Talk – May 5th

The Dubuque  Area Humanists is sponsoring a free talk, “From Fundamentalist Preacher  to Atheist Professor and the Problem with Jesus’ Ethics,” by Hector Avalos PhD.  The address is Sunday, May 5 at 1 PM at the Best Western Conference Center,3100 Dodge Street, Dubuque.

Dr Avalos was born in Mexico and moved with his family to Texas where he became a Pentacostal minister at age of seven. Wanting to preach with more authority he became an expert in ancient languages but then found what Christian scholars  reported in the Bible was questionable. He earned money to graduate from U of Arizona and then Harvard where he got his doctorate.

 While working on his degree at Harvard he had to deal with a life-changing pulmonary disease. His most recent  book in press  is on religion and violence. Avalos is professor of religious studies at Iowa State University.
