Dec. 12 – “Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress” (2005)

Set during the Communist re-education period of China’s history, this adaptation of the novel features the uplifting, emotional power of forbidden music, forbidden books, and forbidden love. It proves that artistic and creative thinking cannot be suppressed and there are great and noble characteristics that make up the human spirit. It also helps that the author of this bestselling book (largely autobiographical) is also the film’s director. Note: The film is in Chinese, with English subtitles. Frank Potter notes that the scenery of the lush countryside alone make this poetic, timeless movie worth watching.
